What is a Vestibular Assessment?

Vestibular and concussion assessments are evaluations used to diagnose and manage issues related to balance, dizziness, and head injuries, particularly concussions.

Vestibular Assessment

The vestibular system is a part of the inner ear and brain that helps control balance and eye movements. A vestibular assessment is used to evaluate the function of this system, especially if a person is experiencing dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, or related symptoms. The assessment may include:

  • Videonystagmography (VNG): Tests eye movements to see how they are affected by changes in head position. In the clinic this is done using infrared video goggle technology to augment the assessment.

  • Rotational Chair Testing: Measures how the vestibular system responds to movement.

  • Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP): Evaluates the reflexes that stabilize vision during head movements.

  • Balance Tests: Balance and postural tests to assess overall stability.
